Acclaim Software Limited is a family-owned, independent software company based in Auckland, New Zealand. It was founded in 1995 by Eric Schwerzel so that he could follow his passion for writing useful software.
The company remains deliberately small and focused, with simplicity, privacy, affordability and personal support at the heart of its products.
From Bespoke Development to Cashbook Complete
Acclaim originally developed bespoke software for a wide variety of companies. Contract work naturally went through busy and quiet periods, so the team worked on Cashbook Complete whenever things were slow.
The idea began when Eric tried using Quicken and then MYOB for Acclaim's own accounts. He wanted an accounting program that made it clear where the money came from and where it went, without forcing ordinary business owners to understand a complicated general ledger. He therefore began building the straightforward accounting system that he wanted to use himself.
Cashbook was expanded so that Acclaim had one of its own products to demonstrate at a trade show, since confidential bespoke systems could not be shown. Its first sale followed in 1997. Within a few years, Cashbook was outselling the bespoke development work, so Acclaim stopped taking on contract projects and concentrated on Cashbook.
Accounting That People Can Understand
Cashbook Complete is designed primarily for small businesses and organisations. Its approach is intentionally easy to follow: import a bank statement, then assign each transaction to an income or expense category. Because users can see and understand what they are doing, they are more likely to enter their accounts correctly.
That genuine ease of use remains the compliment Acclaim hears most often. Cashbook has now received more than 35,000 registrations and has been used in around 50 countries, principally New Zealand and Australia. Some customers have relied on it for more than 20 years.
